Gosford Park (ITV, 10.40pm)
What's It About? Robert Altman's impeccable period drama follows the goings on at a posh country house over the course of an eventful weekend. Peer of the realm William McCordle and his upper-crust wife Sylvia invite a gaggle of friends over for a dinner party and a spot of hunting.
However, the pleasant get-together is ruined when the host is found dead. As the police prevent anyone from leaving the house, tongues wag below stairs about what has happened.
Is It Any Good? Absolutely. As well as boasting glorious cinematography and remarkable attention to detail, the snappy script won an Oscar for British thesp and Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes.
Anything Else? Keep your eyes peeled whenever Jeremy Northam is at the piano. It's sometimes his brother (a classically trained pianist) playing.
Oliver Stone was so inspired by the movie, when asked if he'd like to make a movie in the UK he said he'd like to make a version of Upstairs Downstairs.
Starring: Michael Gambon, Maggie Smith, Jeremy Northam, Ryan Phillippe, Kelly Macdonald, Clive Owen
Star Rating: **** (2001)
