YouTube is increasingly becoming the place to go when you want to find new scripted entertainment. Here are the top four web series on YouTube
Emma Approved
About: “I am Emma Woodhouse. I Make Your Life Better.”
I may be going a bit against the majority, but I actually prefer Emma Approved to The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. While the LBD was really, really good, Emma Approved is simply stunning. They’re both witty adaptations of Austen novels, but EM has an electric appeal that LBD didn’t quite manage to harness. The casting is magic and Brent Bailey, who plays Mr. Knightley, is possibly the best Knightley I can imagine, he certainly holds a candle to Jeremy Northam’s brilliant portrayal in the 1995 film adaptation, and that’s saying something. Dayeanne Hutton is charming as the hapless Harriet Smith, James Brent Issacs is delightful as Mr. Martin, or B-Mart as he’s laughingly referred to in this, and the supporting cast is also amazing. Really, though, the stand-out actor in this one is Joanna Sotomura as the lead character. Sotomura’s layered portrayal of Emma is poignant and moving, and she humanizes Emma in a way which no other actress has previously achieved. This really is one of the best web series out there, and you definitely need to give it a try. By the second or third episode, you’ll be utterly hooked!
