I am tempted to look inside too much also. We have to make the effort to look outside. It's why we fly, really, to look out.
Notice that one pilot was totally surprised. Traffic checks should give you a mental picture of who is where and where they are going. Maybe its not possible with all the traffic they had, in which case pilot no 2 was right. "I should have gone somewhere else"
