RIZ: "Fly high, have fun, and be safe."
On July 19, 1989, a DC-10 lost all of its hydraulic systems and made an emergency "landing" at Sioux City, Iowa. Of 296 on board, 185 survived. Were it not for the heroic actions of the crew and PIC Al Haynes, ALL would have perished, as is obvious to anyone who has seen footage of that crash.
Of the many excellent safety seminars sponsored by the FAA, the most memorable for me was held in Buffalo some years ago, at which Al Haynes himself discussed in detail the above accident. Going beyond the facts, Haynes talked about the psychodynamics and guilt feelings which lasted for years afterword, for not being able to "save everybody". Even though no one on board was in any way at fault, the human psyche is often unforgiving.
Tonights free seminar (no RSVB) is 7:00-9:00 PM at the Radisson Hotel Rochester Riverside (120 East Main Street). Topic: What went wrong? This will be analysis of several accidents from the perspective of NTSB investigators. Not to be missed...by me at least.
