Diamonds are what we could be getting EVERY single day this week, the conditions are that exceptional. So far no takers, but the week isn't over yet. Some of you know that soaring is best on the "front" side of the high, because the upper flow features either cold advection aloft, allowing the boundary layer (BL in BLIP) to flip, or at least maintains a neutral lapse rate aloft. But once on the "back side", you get stable air aloft and things go downhill. Normally, you get one or two days of "good" high. But not this time: the flow at 500mb and higher, which controls the positioning of the surface high, stays pretty much stationary for the whole week, way up in Canada. Very unusual, but this whole spring and summer have been that.
Balloons are what we are doing this weekend, and those of you reading this who are not FLSC members should get your derrieres down to Dansville for a glider ride, as we will be launching same all day every day. As for any members who have been in the "doldrums" lately, know that Dave Vanderlinden is helping with OPs. If that isn't an inspiration for the rest of us, I don't know what is.
