Chuck...shame on you! Although not an instructor, I take umbrage with your implication that our marvelous instructors are overly talkative or overweight! And dittos on congratulating our new solo pilots!

: To Dave Van Der Linden and Mike Kostin,
: You both probably noticed that the gliders
: fly differently without all the noisy dead
: weight in the back.
: Congratulations on your first solo flights.

: Sunday, July 19 was a big day at Finger
: Lakes
: Soaring Club in Dansville, NY. Not one, but
: two students made their first solo flights.
: Dave Van Der Linden of Hemlock, NY, was
: turned loose in the club's Blanik L-13 by
: instructor Tom Roberts. After a
: picture-perfect 20-minute flight, Dave was
: heartily congratulated by all present, and
: was a good sport when the traditional bucket
: of water was administered by Jake Smith, 13.
: (Jake, who expects to solo on his 14th
: birthday in the near future, has a record of
: dousing our solo pilots for a couple of
: years now, and will do well to bring some
: dry clothes when his time comes. It'll be
: payback time from more than one soggy
: pilot.)
:
: A couple of hours later, instructor Jim
: Rizzo decided he'd had enough riding around
: in the back while Mike Kostin, 16, did all
: the flying. So Mike took off by himself in
: the club's ASK21, and showed us how to get
: to cloud base before returning. After Mike
: landed, his mom played along, distracting
: him while the buckets approached unseen. The
: first bucket, the small one, was filled with
: confetti as a decoy. Dodging that one caused
: Mike to run straight at the big bucket,
: filled with real water. Who says we can't
: have fun?
