So now we come to the end of Soar Fest. I can understand why people who work for a living weren't able to come down, but it escapes me why more derelicts like myself didn't. Many lovely days, on which my flights averaged over four hours, and almost no one else from our club. Thanks to tow pilot Gary from the Niagara club who provided tows (I wasn't about to call one of our tow pilots for one or two tows), to Walt who makes real blueberry pancakes with real maple syrup every morning, and all the rest of the Niagara people who were more than willing to help the few FLSC folks get airborne, and later put planes away. And after flying, it was off to the Big Sky for tall drinks, tall tales, and good food. Jake is a very perceptive young man.
As for this weekend: cut to the chase. Sunday apparently the better day as per soaring, but...
Saturday will feature a lower cloud base (around 2,000' AGL plus or minus a few hundred), a more-extensive cover (70-90%), and a gentle west wind to help to trigger weak thermals off the ridge. Basically maritime weather. The drier Sunday will feature a higher cloud base (about 1,000 feet higher) and less cover (50-70%), so obviously better for staying up, right? Not so fast. Lack of wind on Sunday will preclude mechanical uplift for ridge thermals. It will be interesting to see which day has the longer flights.
