Tuesday 5/12/09 was a super day thanks to James Rizzo Esq. We took off at about 2:30 pm and were immediately in strong lift at the end of Runway 32. I thought there was something wrong with my instruments as they were pegged.. I got off at about 1700' AGL and immediately entered a thermal that took me to 5,000' MSL. Another few turns and I was at 7,000' MSL and cloudbase. I started north and flew at 6,000 to 7,000 ft without turning to Geneseo. I proceeded north from there to Nevin and could see the LeRoy airport. Flew to the Leroy Airport and thermaled back up to 8,000 MSL, then flew over our house on Oatka Creek, which is just north of the LeRoy Airport. I took some photos of our house and the towns of LeRoy and Caledonia. While taking the photos, I was sucked up into the cloud which got my attention really quickly. I dove out of the cloud at 90 knots and headed back south to Avoca by way of the Cohocton Wind Farm. From there, on to Hornell and then to Nunda. I got down to 4000' near Nunda because I my feet were cold. One more thermal to 8,000' and then landed after 3.1 hours and some very cold feet. If we had been able to launch earlier, I would have attempted a gold distance. As it was, I covered 152 miles in 3.1 hrs. In retrospect, I should have attempted the gold distance. I have never seen 8 knots on the vario averager before today. The lift usually drops off as you head north, but not today. It looked good for 10 miles north of the Thruway. I love this sport!!!.
