Roger Williams, unlike the Puritans, wasn't out to convert the Native Americans; rather, his goal was to understand them by studying their language and culture. In this excerpt from his poem "The Courteous Pagan Shall Condemn", he chides the Puritans, and especially the clergy, for their hypocrisy (note: "want" = lack). Written in 1643, just as true today.
Let none sing blessings to their souls,
For that they courteous are:
The wild Barbarians with no more
Than nature, go so far:
If nature's sons both wild and tame
Humane and courteous be:
How ill becomes it sons of God
To want humanity?
