FLSC members Jack and Austin Gilbert, Instructor Jim Rizzo, Tow Pilot Chuck Taft and perennial line boy, Chuck Zabinski got in some rare January flying on Tuesday, January 8, 2008. The temperature briefly hit 70 deg F. The trusty Blanik L13 and Pawnee were woken from their usual winter hibernation and fired up for 4 flights. Jim Rizzo instructed Jack Gilbert for two flights and Austin Gilbert for one flight. There were big smiles on the faces of all present. We were all happy to be out at the airport and flying. I took a 2000 ft tow and found a small pocket of ridge lift just south of the Lafford's house on the ridge. I did some S-turns trying to stay in the lift and put off the inevitable for about 20 minutes. The winds aloft were strong at about 20 knots out of the SSW but only about 10 knots at ground level. There wasn't much ridge lift and no thermals but the flying was fun anyway. I'm really glad we didn't have to wait for April 1st to get those first flights of the year.
Steve Kronquest showed up to work on his just purchased Pegasus for the start of the flying season and supervised the airport dogs, Shala and Jake.
Junior Members, Jake Smith and Andy Longhini showed up after school in hopes of a flight but we ran out of daylight at about 4:30 PM.
Thanks to Jim Rizzo for instruction and Chuck Taft for the tows.
