Last Saturday 11/3/07, I had the privilege to soar with a couple of masters of the air. The lift on Saturday was small and tight and topped out at about 4,200 MSL. Staying up was not a problem as their was plenty of lift but the inversion topped us out at 4200' MSL. After topping out one thermal and searching for another over the Lafford's house, I saw a couple of seagulls heading northeast. I followed them into a good thermal and soared with them for a minute. They then headed north towrd Conesus Lake. I followed them again and found about 6 to eight more thermaling near the radar dome. They are amazingingly proficient. They weren't too happy about me joining them and left as soon as I entered thir thermal. Their inter thermal airspeed was about 60 knots.
I have flown with hawks quite a few times. The hawks don't seem to mind if you join them in a thermal. I guess it's because they are raptors and don't get challenged in the air by other birds.
It's always a humbling experience to fly with the true masters of the air.
