I got to tow that day, and the valley was full of wave like activity. Thanks to RAY CIPRIANO we had a meteorological theorist on the field who explained that the lift would be in front of the castle on the hill. So I towed people up along the front of the ridge all the way from scottsburg to the south facing brow, and had heard Chuck had a great time. Its nice to hear about it, because I did not have time to ask. Thanks Chuck!
Bob Davenport got up to Mt Morris in it. I dont think he explored the tuscarora ridge. Its very interesting. JR
: On Labor Day, a wave developed over Dansville.
: If you remember the day, the wind was out
: of the west on the ridge. The day started
: sunny but a weak front moved in with a cloud
: deck from the north. I got towed up
: expecting a short day of ridge flying due to
: the cloud deck. After an hour of noodling
: around and catching a few weak thermals off
: the ridge, I was thinking about getting
: ready to land. As I was cruising the
: ridge, I caught a really good thermal over
: Rick and Ann's house which took me up to
: 5000 MSL. There were a few semi lenticular
: clouds which went from directly over
: Dansville to Perkinsville. I suddenly found
: smooth rising air on the north edge of the
: cloud and could fly without turning. I
: turned back east over 390 and kept flying
: straight in the wave until I got to north of
: Wayland. I then jumped to another wave over
: Perkinsville. You could fly all around the
: area in rising air without turning. The
: clouds started to close in under me at about
: 6500' MSL. I turned back west and found a
: clear space and descended, The wave was
: persistent for about 2 hours. I believe the
: wave developed because of constant west wind
: up to 5000 ft with a north wind due to the
: front at higher altitude. I flew around for
: about an hour in the wave. It was a lot
: better soaring day than I anticpated when we
: launched. There was some rough air due to
: the wave rotor as I descended but it was a
: relatively small rotor which you could pass
: through quickly.
:
: Wow, a great way to end the Labor Day
: Weekend.
