We had another great attempt at Gold Distance on Saturday. Doug Bradley in his Libelle planned a task from Dansville to Geneseo to Cash Creek Pa and back home. By my estimation that’s about 195 statute miles. From the report that Doug gave us, apparently he got off to a very good start after releasing low in the strong thermal, climbing to a go-ahead altitude in a matter of a few minutes and making the first turn point shortly after that. Apparently things got more difficult after his south end turn at Cash Creek, scratching it out over Corning on his return and ending up in a field 4 mile short of Jolamtra airfield.
I only have a good idea of the amount of stress and patents this kind of flying requires, and I will always have a great deal of respect for individuals who take on this sort of challenge, regardless of the final result. There are numerous easy routes to completing badge requirements, but a flight such as this demonstrates the character and resolve, the full meaning of which, is only truly understood by those who have faced an equal challenge. Please join me in congratulating Doug on a very fine flight, and providing him with the encouragement to keep flying distance.
