Steve Kronquest was there too, and flew with Tom Roberts for an hour and a half, in what was probably the most exciting flight of the day. at one point I was maybe half a mile away when they started to go up like a rocket, but by the time I got to them they were 1000' above me and I was holding my variometer. Thats ok though because I got to return the favor! lift was very altitude specific. Tom Reported the only way to get a thermal was to go for the little wispy starts. The big Daddy's were just hanging around.
: Tom Roberts, Doug Bradley Jon Vanderhoof
: (towing) and yours truly had the airport and
: the sky to themselves on Saturday, in 25
: degree weather that was truly awe inspiring.
: There was clear air, cloud streets, a 15-25
: kt wind from the north west (aloft) and W NW
: on the ground, that produced not only
: orographic wonders to 3900 msl but strong
: thermals as well. "Jingle bells"
: and "White Christmas" could be
: heard when the tow plane entered flurries
: from the best scenes in Bing Crosby's
: repertoire.
: I was sorry I did not distribute my
: hand warmers because eveyone's toes forced
: them to land after about 1&1/2 hours of
: the most memorable flight in well, 30 days,
: anyway. Winter Soaring is here! Rejoice!
: Now all we have to do is get a plow for the
: tractor (I have a bead on one now) and a
: Woods belly mower! For new years we will
: plow the snow and cut the grass. Who's In?
