Hi JT,
First, I'm really sorry to hear about your injury-was this something tentatively planed or accident?
You know, recently I have had setbacks-after my lung transplant in 94, I had a very successful athletic career and lifestyle-in 2001, I did come down with severe kidney disease and spend almost 2 years setative and pretty sick-it was sooo difficult as my main passion in life, after my husband, family and dog-is exercise, fitness.
After my kidney tx in oct last year after being so setatary, i wanted to "jump" right back in-however, I have realized-trying to practice what I preach-I have to train "right" and "smart" therefore, feeling I would be putting too much stress onmyself and body decided to drop out of world games, postpone my first sprint triathlon until september and although plan to do 5k's,cycling and duathlon events-my first serious competition is not until august 14 when I compete in my first fitness competitin based on a military style obstacle course, strength moves, and physique. Im excited about it and feel like I am giving myself enough time to be fully prepared.
the reason why ive brought this up is because sometimes we have to make educated decisins that protect the bodies we cherish and fought so hard for-as well as ask to perform at a particular level.
I know more than anyon how hard making these choices are so I want you to know I support your decisionwhatever it may be and will be here for you to help you on your recovery and road back.
okay, lets see-what do we know? We know you are not supposed to do any strenuous exercise for 6 months. You do not want to do something that could injure your eye or cause infection-increased blood flow through exercise may cause stress on the eye and that may be why it is contraindicated. I think you need to keep a good communication with your doctor. I know your workouts and exercie is important to you-I would ask your doctor what your limitations are-ie, what CAN you do in form of exercise and what is safe, then make informed decisions. Personally JT, I think you need to heal correctly and workout within your limits given for a while-the surgery is still very new so give it some time-healing is funny and evryone is different but the better you take care of yourself-proper nutrition, rest, exercise within given limits-you may come back fast-just make short term goals for yourself right now-but always have that long term goal to strive for.
About the games-it is a great oppertunity and a good experience-what about choosing some low-stress level events..maybe not what you were hoping for but something? I do not think itwould be smart to put yourself in th situation of competiting in your main events(cycling?)running?, because I think you are a competitior as I and would go all out put in the situation(i know myseld I wouldnt be able to hold back) therefore I think, only my opinion as a fitness trainer/counselor and also a fellow tx athlete you should choose to look towards US 2004,as I am, or really do some soul searching and make sure if you do choose to attend games to only do events that the doctor will allow(if any) o maybe just be a mascott and go for experience?
I just think unfortunately JT it wouldnt be a good decision for you t do any real physical training for a while-I hope this helps and remember it was eye surgery not kidney stuff and you have alot more events and competitions to compete in-as long as you take care of your body now
Let me know how you are and what you decide-all my best...truely
Dottie
