There may be some light and medium wind conditions on flat water where the classic boats may be as fast as the wide bows, but I am doubtful about them being faster. As a veteran of 23 years in a narrow-bow classic boat I would strongly recommend you design to the wide-bow specifications if building a new boat. I am also an inland sailor but have noticed that sailing a narrow-bow fireball in a fleet now comprised mainly of wide-bowed boats to be a liability in most conditions.
