Four boats braved the cold weather to make the trip to Atlanta, GA over the weekend of November 17-18 for the Eastern Regional Championships. The Atlanta Yacht Club located on Allatoona Lake hosted the event for us and they did a great job. The only down side to the weekend was due to an extreme drought the lake, which is under the control of the Army Corp of Engineers, had been drained to the point that the race course could not be more than a couple of hundred yards long on any leg. IN a way that made for some pretty tight racing as positions changed rather quickly during the races but the end results ended up being pretty consistent. We sailed four races on Saturday in light conditions and all races on Sunday were cancelled due to no wind on Sunday. The club supplied a roast beef dinner on Saturday night as well as two breakfasts and a hoagie lunch on Sunday. One of the purposes of the holding the race at this location was in an effort to find another place that we could possibly host some regattas in the future without driving 21 hours to sail with our friends down south. As far as driving time goes Atlanta is about half way and taking into concideration the hospitality and location this proofed to be a good location and will be concidered for future regattas. The accomodations were great as club members had private cabins that they donated for us to stay in and the meeting room at the club house had cable TV and a working fireplace. Although Pat did have the option to stay in the dumpster he opted for the loft cabin with private toilet and showers. At the end of the weekend the results were Sam Methem and James Nunn taking first place, Pat Crump and Ned Goss taking second and Graham Shaefer using his father, Duncan, as crew took third. Lainey and myself took fourth. Everybody had a good time and hopefully the next time we go there the drought conditions will be long past.
