Thanks for the reply. I have never worked with kelvar and know little about the stuff but I know it is used in glass construction somehow but other than that my knowledge is nothing about it. What I am trying to do is put together building instruction for a wide bow and we want it to reflect the best possible method to construct a home built Fireball that will be strong, light , and competetive. I understand that certian things such as kelvar might be possible for a one of a kind boat but what I want to have when completed is instructions that will take a amatuer builder through the construction process and have a good boat when it is done. Again any suggestions please pass it along. We have a lot of information and have built one wide bow already that I think is a good hull but it has yet to hit the water.
: Kevlar is hard to find below 6oz.
: Ideally a 1.8oz would be best for
: this area. I sure would go for a
: roll of bi-axile 2" tape if it
: was very light weight. The issue
: with Kevlar is it is too stiff and
: will not hold a bend, you would wet
: it down in a hull joint but 15min.
: later it's lifted and forming air
: pockets. Also with Kevlar if you
: break the e-poxy coating the Kevlar
: will wick in water, not much but it
: is a slight problem. Another thing
: is how to sand the rough edge off.
: I've been sanding the outside edges
: of the tapes down to a fine smooth
: edge, it could be my quality of
: tapes as the threaded edge has a
: rough ridge after setting, sanding
: Kevlar would be very very hard to do
: by hand.
:
: Use of Kevlar may be an over-kill
: in strength and expence.

: Over the past couple of years we
: have
: been guided to building boats using
: the chineless construction method
: and joining the seams together with
: fiberglass tape and epoxy. Should I
: be looking at reinforcing the hull
: seams between the bottom and bilge
: panels and the top side and bilge
: panels with something stronger like
: Kelvar or is this more than
: necessary. Or would it even work.
: Is Kelvar something you use with
: fiberglass hulls only or does it
: adhere to wood as well. I it
: lighter than glass? I think these
: are questions we need to look at.
: Any response please send it along.
