Zebra Finch, growth on bill

My male zebra finch has recently developed a pale yellowish-white growth at the base of its upper mandible; it appears to be on the bill itself. I'd say it was about 1/8 inch across, not raised much above the surface of the natural bill material, but noticeable. It looks to be hard and mainly smooth, although I haven't taken the bird in hand to really examine it. The bird is about 4 years old. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge with this? Thank you, I appreciate it.
