How can you tell it is time to remove/seperate baby finches from parents?

My baby finches are 28 days old. Eating on their own very well! I just removed them from the cage from their parents today 9/15/04.Is it to soon? The mama bird was chasing/pecking the baby birds around too much and she already has layed 6 more eggs! I hope I didnt remove them too soon! Can someone tell me what I should do?
