Lavender Finch

I had bought a couple of Lavenders and 2 wks later the female died. Why? The pet shop had no more female Lavender and she suggested that I can get a St.Helena with him. We were not sure of the sex, but now I beleive it is a boy. I have no intensions of breeding. I just wanted a cage with different species. Is that okay? Thanks, Anna
