In 50 + years of being around dogs - this is my first time at the rodeo... OMG...
The dogs went out - Ziva came running back and banging on the door - having a fit. I could smell the skunk.. started calling the boys in. They raced passed me and at this point I wasn't sure if the smell was outside or inside... nothing in the world smells like that. The fumes paralyzed my brain cell and I couldn't remember that "dumb" recipe - so I shoved all the dogs into the shower.
Chipper and Ernie just walked in and sat down - the Fila had to be convinced however.
Things I have learned about skunk odor:
It clings to everything - including moisture in the air.
It will cling to the drain in your house.
Regular shampoo only pisses it off...doesn't get rid of the smell.
Burn the towels that you used to dry the dogs.
It's worth the ride into town for fresh air - even breathing exhaust fumes smells better.
The stink will stick inside your nose for a week.
Put the "dumb" recipe on your fridge -
1 quart peroxide
1/4 cup of baking soda
1 T of Dawn dish liquid
I will never forget this recipe again.
It's worth explaining to the FBI why you bought 50 gallons of peroxide to have it on hand.
If you have excess "forumula" left over pour it down your drains to get rid of lingering skunk smell.
The smell will linger for 10 days...
Remember to buy a hose for this particular use so that you can hook it to the kitchen sink and wash them "OUTSIDE" - no matter how bad it smells outside...or how cold it is.
