Robin,
There are so many diff circumstances that can decide the fate of a Fila's temperament, but I have found that the nervous system never changes. Yes Fila do go thru fear periods, which is why shipping them right at 8 weeks is easier on them than 10-12 weeks. Pups shipped out between 4-6 months of age certainly have a harder time as that is another fear peroid for them.
Now I have brought many adult rescues into my home, and they way they appear initially on the surface is certainly not a deciding factor in how they really are.
I recall a pair I picked up from over in CA from LionsDen breedings, the female was easy enough to handle but when she settled in at my place, she became a fierce and defensive dog, and the more comfortable she got the more that drive kicked in. She scared my neighbor so much that he put up sheet metal roofing along the run fence line.
Well, she went on eventually to be placed with a family down in Texas, and some time after living there someone broke into their house one night while family was away and raped the daughter and this Fila did nothing!!!!
I can assure you that she had it in her initially but I think sometimes with older Fila the more you pass em around the more they just give up and lose that loyal devotion.
I wouldnt be too concerned yet with your pups nervous system, wait til he has passed thru the juvenile delinquent stage and if he still displays this you can pretty much assume it is a poor nervous system.
