Hi Robin,
I have a question about fear imprint periods vs bad nerves. Is it typical for Fila pups to go through some bad fear imprint periods? Leroy is now almost 5 months and certainly purports himself well as a guard dog. He has the foundational distrust of strangers and gives a pretty nice mean bark at strangers that walk by the house or out of place noises.
However, he has some bad nerve or fear periods as well. At least four times since I have had him he has had anal gland explosions. That is where the dog gets so damn scared his glands go haywire and he smells of glandular poo/Butt Spray = Fear. I have only experienced that from my older dog maybe twice in 3 years and both were during puppy-hood. One of them was when the wiener got knocked out of the back of a moving truck and the other was when he got ran over and wrestled by a full grown male English Mastiff, both pretty significant emotional events for a 6month old.
One of the times we cant figure out why Leroy had fraidy butt-spray, he scared himself playing with a new toy is what we can figure and one of the more significant ones was today as a kid on a skate board came by us. He almost choked himself out trying to run away and sprayed butt gland sauce everywhere. Needless to say it was embarrassing and the poor thing was out of sorts.
Do Fila's grow out of this, I hope, is it typical, do you experience this with pups? Or do you think maybe this is a typical case of someone breeding a weak nerved dog to a weak nerved dog based on looks to make money? If that is the case it will take some work indeed to instill confidence in a weak nerved dog.
I look forward to your feed back.
