Two ideas--I had aa counterweight let go inside a distributor on a 302 years ago that made the car act as you are describing. If you have a really good friend who'll let you swap distributors you can determine if this is the cause in about an hour. First, have you checked to see if you have a bad vacuum leak somewhere?
