I was in the process of replacing the front brake shoes on my 1962 Falcon Wagon and found that the left front drum is cracked. The crack extends along the rim of the drum and does not extend into the area where the shoes contact the drum. On my car, the drum and hub are all one assembly and come off together. I went down to the NAPA store to buy an new pair of drums and found that the only thing that they could find were drums that did not come with the hubs. I checked the AutoKrafters web site and found the same thing. Can someone tell me how I would go about removing and installing the new drums to the hubs? Does this require a press?
Also, I purchased a set of brake SHOES from Advance Auto Parts and put them on. The seemed to be pretty tight to the drums, even when I screwed the adjuster in all the way. When I took it out for a test drive, the screeching noise that they made was outrageous! It sounded like what you see in the movies when an airplane lands with the wheels up and scrapes along on its belly. The sound also seems to be coming from the same wheel that has the cracked drum, so I don't know if there is a connection. I wasn't really impressed with the new brake shoes...they looked kind of shoddy. Does anyone know of a good brand of brake shoes that are still being manufactured?
