I've run Falcons and Econolines for years with alternators and horn relays and never had the alternator diodes go bad until recently, now that they're using junk diodes in the rebuilts. If that really was the reason it had to be the very early ones.
The reversed diode across the relay coil is used in all kinds of electrical stuff, and definitely wouldn't hurt, but I'd say it's unnecessary. JL
