The early (generator) rings have a single contact that goes through the steering wheel to the turn signal switch. Grounding this contact at the horn ring activates the horn relay and blows the horn. The late (alternator) horn rings have two contacts and switch the "hot" side of the horns directly - no relay. 1964-1965 are the only years with the same style in both types as far as I know (two spoke wheel). The steering wheel and turn signal switch are also different, so all need to match, as well as the differences in the wiring and 1965 not having a horn relay. JL
