The wire feeding the coil snapped off at the terminal and fell on the fuel pump. a 15 cent terminal fixed the problem. The wire under the dash survived. We're back on the road.

: At 35 mph the engine died on my 1960
: Ranchero (1966 200 six) yesterday. I
: coasted to the side of the road,
: popped the hood, everything looks
: normal. Get in the car, crank it,
: not a pop. Then I noticed the white
: smoke curling up from under the
: steering column. The switch itself
: was cool, and the smoking stopped
: when I turned the key to off (or
: acc.) No time to look at it last
: night, diving in tonight. I am
: assuming the wire from the switch to
: the coil shorted out under the dash,
: or the coil shorted out and it's
: sucking juice and melting the supply
: wire. In case someone has an insight
: in the next few hours I thought I'd
: throw this out there. Thanks in
: advance.
