Intesting!
My neoprene seal fit into the retainer just fine. I did put a thin layer of Ultra Copper on the backside of the seal to (hopefully) prevent any leaks there. The engine hasn't been installed yet, so I don't yet know how it worked out.

: I ran into the same thing when I
: replaced the rear oil seal in my
: 170. I solved the pointy thing
: problem by filing a groove into the
: neoprene oil seal so that it would
: not interfere with the metal point.
: But when I tried to fit the neoprene
: oil seal in place, it seemed that it
: did not fully contact the flange on
: the crankshaft, which would have
: resulted in a leak. I removed it and
: replaced it with a rope seal and the
: rope seal doesn't seem to be leaking
: after two years of operation.
:
: One thing I DID learn when doing the
: seal replacement was that you need
: to first install the seal in place
: and torque the rear main cap to
: crush the seal against the crank and
: get it into its proper shape. Then
: remove the cap, remove the crank,
: and THEN apply some oil to the seal
: to lubricate it. Then put it all
: back together again. If you just
: install the seal, oil it, and torque
: down the cap, it will bind up
: something fierce and you can hardly
: turn the crank at all. The Falcon
: shop manual shows the rope seal
: being initially formed to shape with
: a special tool, but how many of us
: have one of them...???
