I'm in the process of doing a "gasket overhaul" on my 170 - fixing all the leaks and painting it nicely. These days, you get a neoprene real seal to replace the rope seal that came in this engine. In the retainer, there's a pointed protrustion that was designed to pierce the rope seal and keep it from rorating when the crank turns. This protrusion would certainly cause the neoprene seal to lift away from the retainer and allow oil to leak between the retainer and the seal. I'm thinking of removing it with a disc grinder. Anyone have any better ideas?
Thanks,
Jim
