Like Don said to check to see if dist is in right the #1 plug should be at the "top of the compression stroke" and if it is the rotor should be pointng towards the #1 plug wire on the distrib. If this is aligned then youcab=n use the timing ligh to get it right. Also could be a fuel filter or bad gas like Don said. Or could be a vacuum problem , are the vacuum lines old and cracked?
Years back I worked in a gas station and a man came in with a car smoking and running rough and all they did was change the air filter , it was so bad the engine couldnt get any air. Like running full choke all the time.
Good luck with your ride

: If you do not have a remote starter
: switch, I would suggest getting one.
: They are not expensive. You should
: also have a timing light and dwell
: meter if you want to tune up the
: engine yourself.
:
: To get TDC, remove coil wire for
: safety and #1 plug. Crank engine and
: feel for compression. Do this
: several times so you can feel the
: difference between compression and
: exhaust strokes. Stop the cranking
: immediately and note mark on front
: damper. It should align with TDC on
: our timing mark on the front cover.
: You will now have TCD. Observe
: whether the rotor is pointing to #1
: on your distributor cap. If you
: removed your distributor earlier and
: cranked the engine, you could be 180
: degrees off. Check your wires to
: make sure they are sequenced.
:
: If the car sat for a long time, you
: may have problems with gas. It
: shellacs over time and can clog up
: everything from the sending unit
: inside the tank, fuel lines, fuel
: pump and carb. You may have to do a
: complete cleanout and some point.
:
: Check your gas from the fuel pump by
: removing the line to the carb and
: place it into a glass jar and crank
: the engine to see what comes out.
: You should get some good pulses of
: gas. If you have gas problems with
: the car sitting, you will have to
: start at the tank or you will just
: be contaminating the system again.

: new owner of this beautiful sedan..
: and it wont start! I just bought it
: the other day.. the previous owner
: said he knew nothing about it
: mechanically and that he only had
: done the cosmetic restoration.. He
: had told me he had issues starting
: it before I came to pick it up.. and
: needless to say it was a rough ride
: home..very hesitant upon incline
: acceleration, and very shakey moving
: from a stopping position..I tried
: starting it today and nothing.. its
: cranking but not turining over.. I
: figured i'd tune it up RE: the lack
: of power it had driving it the
: previous day, but still nothing.. Im
: pretty sure I got the firing time
: right: 1,5,3,6,4,2? I dont know if i
: messed the timing up or not.. if i
: did how do i get TDC?? how do i know
: if my comp is good? is the engine
: getting gas?? Im new to engine
