If so the brakes will loosen rather than tighten and may act unpredictably. To check this you can pull and release the cable and watch the adjuster wheel - it should expand (tighten) every time it clicks a notch. Sometimes the parts are marked "L" and "R", but not always. I doubt this is the problem though, because it usually just results in a low pedal. JL

To disable the self adjusters simply remove the cables, leaving the spring and ratchet plate in place. The brakes will now adjust only manually.
