When he was masturbating the doctor was leaning toward TS [Tourette syndrome] as a diagnosis. This is not normal behavior. Get him into therapy. _________________________ People with severe mental retardation often do things like this because they just can’t learn that it’s inappropriate. I think you would have mentioned that.... I don’t know why the doc would say it has nothing to do with sex—if he shows it to a girl on the subway, that sounds to me VERY much like a sexual advance. Just because he didn’t touch her or attack her, that’s still sexual behavior. Is he on Ritalin for impulse control? Maybe that would help.... Best wishes. The husband and I were discussing this and he says that our boy masturbating could be TS [Tourette syndrome], but that the exposure doesn’t sound like a tick. If he is slightly retarded maybe that could answer for why he exposes himself; whatever he is feeling, he probably does not realize the exact nature of what he is doing. PLEASE BE PATIENT WITH HIM. And take him to a behavioral therapist who is better able to discuss all possibilities, including medications. I am also sorry that I was not aware of this fine forum for exhibitionists sooner, as I have been one since I was about your son’s age. Please continue to read other’s experiences and how they are working at controlling this behavior. I have submitted four articles based on how I grew up with this “syndrome.” (Please read in Other Articles under RDG) Today I am on parole until September 28, 2005 and I feel very confident that I am in control of my impulses. If your son is hyperactive and obsessive-compulsive then please continue to see a behavioral therapist who has had experience and has read all the literature on this sort of behavior. Although it is not considered a sexually motivated behavior, it is considered so by our judicial system and there may be some sexual inhibitions that your son should explore, as I have over many years of self-study and therapy.
