Posted by Frank/Tim/Haunted on September 12, 2005, 3:26 am If so, I have a question. Two questions, actually: 1. Are you aware of the behavioral deviation of exhibitionism existing in your country? That is, are there men who go around showing their penises to women in public places on purpose? The reason I ask is because some of us, in our studies of this subject, would like to know in which cultures and societies in which parts of the world this happens, and how much, or to what extent. 2. Is is legal for a man to take out his penis and urinate somewhere in public even though women may be passing by who might see him? Or, rather than whether it is legal, I should ask, Is it the kind of thing the police normally never arrest people for, and as a result, is done regularly? If it is a regular practice, this opens up the possibility that some of the men who do it, although they pretend that the only reason they’re taking it out is because they have to urinate, could possibly be using that as an excuse for exhibitionism. I read Ryan’s story below (“My struggles at home and abroad”) where he tells of traveling to a foreign country and noticing that the men there could just take it out in public, though I don’t know what country it was he went to. I would like to know both if there are some men who expose themselves to women in blatant ways—such as wearing a long coat with nothing on underneath, and then opening it and showing themselves when a woman passes them someplace in public—and if urinating in public is something that happens regularly, and if the possibility exists that women who pass by can see men’s penises this way. Thanks for answering. Frank From what I hear and read, I get the impression that in many countries public urinating is very common, even accepted, and that it’s very easy for a man to take out his penis in public in front of a passing female, ostensibly for the purpose of urinating, but with it in her view anyway, without having a thing to worry about, as far as getting into any legal trouble for it. _________________________ I don’t find the subject of urinating in public very interesting at all. Any situation that adds to my obsession is a threat to my recovery from that obsession. Do you think recovering drug addicts sit around and talk about the ‘glory days of drug using?’ or ‘successful drug-using’ stories? A drug addict having that kind of discussion would become closer and closer to enabling their obsession, to justifying it and finding a way to continue the cycle okay. But you are all adults, so do as you like. _________________________ You mentioned in a post that you are in Canada, right? I didn’t mean Canada. Sharing the same ethnic and cultural origin as the U.S., on most issues of thought and behavior, Canadians and Americans are alike. I think of Canada as a developed country. Obviously, having a high standard of living and an Anglo-Saxon culture, it’s going to be the same on the issue as Britian, the U.S. and all the Anglo-Saxon countries. Haunted, many of us appreciate all your words of encouragement to those struggling with overcoming the behavior. Keep up the good work. And I certainly don’t want to do anything that causes a threat to your recovery from the obsession. Not finding the subject interesting is understandable. But sometimes those in scientific, medical or technological fields must study subjects they don’t find interesting in order to improve man’s knowledge of the subject, which can then serve for practical uses. There have been some interesting, unprecedented studies done on the subject of exhibitionism right here on this board which will be useful to therapists who deal with it. One very important area of study on this subject is cross-cultural research. Why is it that this behavioral pattern is so much more prevalent in our Anglo-Saxon countries than in countries of any other ethnicity? There must be reasons for these things. One of them may—possibly—be the above situation in the way for some men a partial exposure to the situation early in life doesn’t cause the pressure to build up so much later in life. Much needs to be studied on the subject. That was my purpose for asking the question. Let me qualify now: Anyone from any non-Anglo-Saxon countries, responses will be appreciated. Thank you. _________________________ I lived in Asia for two years. I have intimate first-hand knowledge of how 'Non-Anglo-Saxon' morality views this subject. I think you may have made some uninformed assumptions about me. To be quite frank my own personal belief structure isn’t born of typical ‘WASP’ morality. I am not simply the product of western conditioning or blind cultural brainwashing. I have been around a bit. I think you may want to examine some of your own assumptions. Not trying to be rude... just frank. Link: Post a response

It would be interesting to hear from some of the board’s readers in other countries on this subject. Those of you in other countries who are reading this, why don’t you speak up and tell us about it? It would be very interesting to hear about. Thanks.
