Everton 0 Norwich 2, 11th April 1981. Joe Royle (one of my favourite blues of all time) scored for Norwich but I did get to meet my hero at the time Steve McMahon outside the ground after the game (he was on crutches).
I mentioned this to Big Joe years later at a Sportmans dinner when he was manager of the club. They say you should never meet your heroes but Joe was superb. Had a great chat with him and he even invited me and my dad into the special guest room after to meet Brian Labone and Alex Young, introducing the latter as the Golden Vision. Fantastic fella. I bored him to death about going up to see Celtic a bit due to a family friend. He asked me to let him know if I saw any talent that Everton could be interested in.
That followed about a year of me writing to him about various Celtic players including John Collins and Pierre Van Hoijdunk, always getting a detailed written response from him.
