this "earned it" narrative is absolute shite.
the whole model is broken, and just gets moreso over time.
by finishing an extra place up the league you should get a couple of mill extra in todays money. if its the difference between 5th and 4th and the CL then the money tap gets turned on big time. do that for a couple of years and then it becomes very difficult to fail because you have a fcukton more money than 90% of the teams you are supposed to be competing against.*
its why FSW was clearly only arsed about finishing 3rd or 4th in the league each year but making sure he got CL footy. he knew he couldnt best utd or arsenal for the league and the club realised they didnt have to.
even if you end up with a couple of years out of it, you have a better squad than virtually anyone else and can financially outmuscle other clubs in the transfer market. getting back in is inevitable when you can spend 70m on a goalie and 80m on a CB - just to give two examples.
*heard a stat the other day that the RS wage bill is twice our turnover, yet we are supposed to be on a level playing field.
