We can thank him for Everton finally getting Nigel Martyn.
One of my favourite stories about Venables and his love of money, was when he arranged a pre- season tour of Australia for Leeds. During the tour, Tel absented himself from managerial duties and left his assistant and coaching staff in charge of the squad, whilst he attended to some "personal business."
A few months later, he showed up on Wish You Were Here, doing a feature on the Gold Coast.
Nigel Martyn, who had already called time on his own England career, due to not wanting to be away from his family, just to be third choice goalkeeper, had refused to travel to Australia, saying travelling to the other side of the world to play pre-season friendlies against second rate local Aussie sides was a waste of time and money and called out Venables for this. That was the end of his Leeds career and he was on his way to FC Handsome. A few years later than he should have, admittedly.
