My thought is that modern day goalkeeping is much more challenging than in the past for two main reasons: - The role has completely changed, you cant use your hands for back passes, you need good footwork and passing ability. You basically need to train and develop a wider skill set - With the exposure the game gets and the scrutiny from TV, every error they make is amplified
As someone points out below, if in a game a striker misses there is less fall out than a keeper error. Take Sunday; the Calvert Lewin miss at the end was equally as bad an error as Pickford for their goal. DCL scored one and Pickford also made a blinding save from Benteke. They are equal on the day I would say?
I would suggest that any keeper we ever sign going forward will make mistakes. I cant think of a keeper in the league that doesnt make them. Its basically part of the modern game
