They've compiled a list where various pundits pick out the player of the year for each team. Merson was given Everton and opted for Pickford. Included in his write up is the following quote;
"You buy full backs for £50m and centre forwards for £70m but when you spend £30m on a keeper, everyone questions it. Its the most important part of the team. No one ever wins anything without a good goalkeeper so his price tag was never a worry for me because you could sell him for more this summer. It was a good buy."
Couple of points...
a) I DISTINCTLY remember him absolutely slating us no more than 9 months ago for signing him and in particular, spending that amount of money on him. He was dancing around the subject that at best, he might be worth 7 or 8 points per season but we needed more than that to progress so should've spent the money elsewhere, which in itself is a ridiculous statement.
b) With reference to his last bit, had Pickford had a mare of a season, I'm pretty sure we wouldn't have been able to sell him for a profit this summer.
I genuinely don't understand how cretins like him not only get a pundits gig, but manage to keep it for so long. I can only guess they've kept him on for 'comedy value' as he's clearly as thick as a whale omelette and some viewers find that amusing.
