Waxing in the Opposite Direction of Hair Growth?

I just started working at a new spa with a different hard wax than I'm used to. I was having alot of trouble with the wax. So, I called the manufacturer and spoke to an educator. She said that I am supposed to apply the hard wax in the opposite direction of the hair growth!!! Has anyone ever heard of doing this????
