It is SOP for salon to take around or up to 10% off gross dollars of service and pay commission on the rest. It isn't the commission it is how do you work and how much can you make under the circumstances. The costs of being an owner are always so much greater than someone could believe unless they have done it themselves. So if you are making 40 or 45% of a service you are making more than salon.
Really work your numbers, don't just look at commission. Many years ago at our salon we paid a lower percentage (35 to 40%) to stylists and our people made more money than salons that paid 50%. Why? They had assistants, front desk managers and things in place that allowed the hair stylist to just do hair.
