Posted by Barbara Nightingale The IGI gives the parents of Martha Erskine Entwistle as Solomon and Ann. She was christened at Manchester Cathedral on 6 May 1838. Other children of Solomon and Ann, also christened at Manchester Cathedral are Jane Entwistle, christened 12 October 1828; Thomas Loft Entwistle, christened 3 March 1833; Ann Entwistle, christened 15 March 1835. I have not been able to locate Solomon and his family in the Manchester area censuses in 1841, but the following family appears in Bethnal Green in 1851: The family are living in Bermondsey in 1861. St. Catherine’s Index has the death of a Solomon Entwistle registered in Chorlton in the second quarter of 1844, volume xx, page 144. Chorlton is in the Manchester area. Presumably the widowed Ann took her family to London following Solomon’s death. Solomon is a very unusual name in Entwistle circles, but I’m afraid I have no more information at the moment. The 1881 Census has Ann & Joseph Brooke living in Bermondsey, and with them, described as a boarder, is 40-year-old Martha E. Entwistle. Both Ann and Martha were born in Manchester.
Ann Entwistle, widow, aged 51; Jane Entwistle, aged 22; James Entwistle, aged 20; Thomas Loft Entwistle, aged 18; Ann Entwistle, aged 16; and Martha Entwistle, aged 13. All were born in Manchester.
