Thoughts are conduits to our feelings. In other words, thoughts come and go. Often the same thoughts come again many time over lifetime. If the thoughts make us feel bad, we confront them with other reasoning thoughts to make us feel better or we act out on the thoughts because there is little else we can do.
Feelings though are tougher to embrace. When we have recurring, unpleasant thoughts, they are really meant to direct us towards a feeling (and often subconscious feeling). If we were to "be" with that feeling (by breathing and meditating is the best method), we can "live" the feeling and let it run its course. When we do this, it will feel unpleasant but once it pain subsides it is a tremendous awakening.
However, one breakthrough does not remake a life. We all harbor vast amounts of suppressed emotions so the exuberance of letting one feeling go is eventually replaced be more of the same or similar feelings from more suppressed emotions.
The key is breathing quietly and letting your feelings come to the surface, and one of the best ways to get in touch with these feelings is be visiting the predominate thoughts that persist in your mind.
