I've loved his work ever since I read Dying of the Light. He's one of my role models. Gene Wolfe, John Crowley, and Ursula K. Le Guin are some other role models. I also love Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast books (Hollywood should high-concept them as Charles Dickens meets Charles Addams). And I'm in awe of C. J. Cherryh's infinitely malleable narrative voice--she can turn her hand to anything, from Russian folklore to grease-and-rivets space adventure, and make it work. (Brothers of Earth is one of my favorites of her novels.) I grew up reading C. S. Lewis and Lloyd Alexander, and in the past couple of years I've realized that the Prydain books influenced me a lot more than I was previously aware of...but if I start going on about children's and YA literature, I'll never stop. :) I'm afraid to start listing other authors, because the list will just get too long! But I'll toss out some names I don't think have been mentioned yet: Robin Hobb, Juliet Marillier, China Mieville, Peter Beagle, Tim Powers, James Blaylock, Jonathan Carroll, Graham Joyce...of course, now I'm moving out of epic fantasy and into more gonzo and contemporary stuff...this is why it's taking me so long to get the Enthusiast's Guide part of the site up! :) And I have to mention Lord Dunsany. His books and stories are just beautiful. If you get a chance to try The King of Elfland's Daughter or The Charwoman's Shadow, I'd love to hear what you think.
It's so hard to list my favorites! There are so many that I don't think they count as favorites anymore. :)
