Good for you. We don't grow onions or shallots here. Anything that's underground (other than potatoes and carrots) usually rot. I do, however, grow green onions. They are a Winter crop here and do very well. They multiply quickly. When they start to go to seed, I pull them up, cut the green off and put them in a cool place for the next season.
There is nothing I plant from seed. The transplants are so inexpensive, it's just easier that way. Plus, I don't have a really large space.
I've pulled everything up and am about to plant carrots, broccoli, green onions, radishes, and a couple of other things in September.
