Plastic coating on romaine lettuce?

There is a video circulating on youtube showing a woman peeling off what looks like a plastic film from her romaine lettuce leaf. There are several articles debating whether this is natural or applied by the growers as a form of protection. Sure enough, I took my own, organic, romaine lettuce leaf and after I broke the leaf in half to make it easier to peel, what looked like a plastic coating came off. What the heck? Does anyone know? Carrie, maybe?
