This is highly dependant upon the type of engine you are running it in. E85 has less energy per gallon than regular gasoline, but has more than methanol. This means if E85 is run in an engine designed for street gas, it will require more fuel to get the same amount of power. However, you can run E85 in a higher compression engine without issue, thus coverting more thermal btus into actual horsepower; hence why alcohol motors make more power than gasoline engines when they run at higher compression.
Fuel - Octane - Btu per Gallon
--------------------------------
87 Gasoline - 87 - 114K
E85 - 105 - 82K
Methanol - 119 - 57K
Short answer: E85 allows for running higher compression which provides more power, usually. If the motor is not going to be high compression, then it may make less power and will definetly make less power per gallon of fuel.
