By chance I was passing St Annes ground last Sunday and noticed a match was about to start. Trinity Gaels were the visitors for a relegation play off. I had not seen Annes play for some time so decided to drop in and watch the match.
There was a very strong wind blowing from Sally’s Gap and it goes without saying it made conditions very difficult. Trinity played most of the second half against the breeze with fourteen men. Although St Annes were camped in their opponent’s territority for most of the second half Trinity came out deserved winners on a 1-11 to
1-9 score line.
What I found interesting was that St Annes were still employing the exact same basic tactics that they were using some months ago, and which has contributed to their relegation. And that was drop the ball into Nipper and Bergo and hope for the best. On a number of occasions this has been successful and Nipper has scored a couple of goals but unfortunately not often enough. Bergo seems to have the impression that the rest of the team should supply every ball to him to enable him score. He constantly berates his teammates if they make a mistake or don’t pass to him at the right time and yet he is often guilty of shooting when a pass would be more appropriate. As a result it seems to have a negative effect on the rest of the team. Paradoxically St Annes seem to have the nucleus of a decent team. They have a number of useful players such as a guy called Trevor who is quite small but has a great engine, another player- Daniel Watson (Wadie)- who is quite good and also their midfielder who they call Brad is very useful. They have a few other good players but I don’t know their names. In my opinion a more innovative use of their outfield players would have seen St Annes half way up the table instead of where they are now.
I brought the mother in law in for a pint into the Mill after the match and I heard a bloke tell his mate that “ Diller” and “ Wally” may not be managing St Annes next season. But don’t quote me on that. However commiserations to St Annes.
