I do the sit/stay or down/stay thing in front of highly-trafficked stores too, and recommend many students do the same once their dogs can do the behavior in less distracting environments. I put a container of treats about 8 feet away and, when an approaching patron heads our way I ask, "Would you like to give my dog a treat?" Of course they would. "OK, as long as my dog is sitting/downing please continue to approach but, if my dog gets up, please stop. If I can keep my dog in a sit/down until you reach us, you may give the dog the treat."
Wonderful exercise. It was how the Disco Dogo learned not to greet new friends over-enthusiastically. (She failed the CGC first time around because she tried to climb into the examiner's lap to give kisses. Not fair, she knew and adored the examiner, but after practicing in front of Target, Kroger, K-Mart, and Wal-Mart, she learned a beautiful and solid sit/stay or down/stay. Except when she sees her friend the CGC examiner. She just gets so excited but knows she's not allowed to jump up, so she puts one shoulder on the ground and, with tush in the air, spins in excitement - hence, Disco Dogo. *G*)
Little Dolly-tzu is, indeed, a doll baby. Shy but so very sweet, cuddler with a non-stop tail. Not as young as claimed, more likely 4-5. Owie toofs, abx now and a dental later. Little 8-9 pound curly boy is utterly precious, and social with all and sundry. Big-time Romeo, dispensing kisses indiscriminately to human and canine alike. He loooooves to play and has excellent canine social skills. If my eyes didn't tell me differently, I'd have thought he was neutered very early in life - no posturing, no dominance (no marking!), just sweet and open with one and all.
Just for grins, my Disco Dogo and her pal the AB. She used to be able to make him get out of whatever spot she wanted just by giving him the evil eye. He's not afraid of her any more (because he knows she loves him and the evil eye is merely for show these days) and refuses to move. So she just uses him as a cushion:
